If you think that fear and intimidation, being right, telling, selling, and yelling work as a leadership style, think again. When humans sense fear the prefrontal cortex part of the brain shuts down and we are stuck in the limbic brain where we experience feelings of fight, flight, freeze and appease, triggering stress hormones to be released in the body. This is widely referred too as the amygdala highjack. When this happens, the brain is literally on lockdown, there is no connection or communication.

Conversations are not just made up of words, they are multidimensional experiences comprised of feelings, energy, tone of voice and non-verbal behaviors. In recent studies only 7 percent of conversational impact is attributed to words, 35 to tone of voice, and 55 to non-verbal behavior and energy.  This takes a great amount of self-awareness.
